NATURE OF WORK
This is professional, supervisory, work that involves providing direct and referral services to the at-risk juvenile and juvenile delinquent populations. An employee in this class supervises all staff of the Agency’s Juvenile Programs. The agency's youth programs provide a variety of services to individual juveniles and their families including, but not limited to: skilled MSW-level assessment, intake services, casework investigations and management, and individual and group counseling. A high degree of skill and mature judgement is necessary in evaluating complex client environments and arriving at viable solutions for the youth client and their caretaker(s), as necessary. This person reviews the work of subordinate counselors for adherence to all agency and program rules, regulations and procedures; ensuring that all programmatic functions meet agency standards as well as all applicable federal, state and local laws. The function of this position also involves evaluating each staff members’ quality of work and attainment of results of program goals through observation, personal conferences, analysis of records and activity reports. This administrator will also be tasked with evaluating existing youth programs and adjusting the curriculum and implementation of the program(s), as necessary, as well as creating innovative approaches to preventative and rehabilitative youth programming for at-risk children and their immediate family members or caretaker(s).
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of general criminal justice policies, procedures, and regulations especially relating to juvenile
justice programming;
- Knowledge of various public and private community resources available for juvenile & family rehabilitative
services
- Knowledge of laws, rules and practices relating to public assistance administered under varying provisions
of federal, state and county laws;
- Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner that stimulates high performance and high morale;
- Ability to diagnose youth & family challenges and create an Individual Treatment Plan of action;
- Ability to conduct interviews with clients effectively and persuasively;
- Ability to obtain and analyze case information and reach sound decisions;
- Ability to express ideas whether oral or written in a clear and concise manner;
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports correctly and in a timely manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in social work, Criminal Justice or Psychology. An MSW or greater from an accredited college or university is preferred. At least five years of successful supervision of employees providing direct social services to at-risk juveniles and their support systems (i.e. parent/guardian) can substitute for the required post-secondary educational requisite.
